Google to donate Istio service mesh to the CNCF

Google Cloud has submitted its fashionable open supply service mesh know-how Istio for donation to the vendor-neutral Cloud Native Computing Basis (CNCF).

“At the moment we’re excited to announce that Google and the Istio Steering Committee have submitted the Istio challenge for consideration as an incubating challenge,” Chen Goldberg, VP of engineering at Google Cloud wrote in a weblog submit.

Launched in 2017, Istio permits builders to handle community site visitors, telemetry, and safety for functions deployed in containers and orchestrated with Kubernetes, which was itself donated to the CNCF by Google in 2015.

Different fashionable service mesh choices embody Linkerd and Consul by HashiCorp. Microsoft additionally introduced in 2020 that it might launch its personal open supply service mesh—referred to as Open Service Mesh (OSM) — and switch it to the CNCF.

Google says that if Istio is accepted by the CNCF it’ll proceed to put money into the challenge as a key maintainer and thru upstream contributions.

Google had initially introduced throughout KubeCon in 2019 that it wasn’t planning on donating both its fashionable serverless platform Knative or Istio to the CNCF any time quickly, preferring to handle Istio itself below its Open Utilization Commons basis.

Google modified path by donating Knative in November 2021, an utility that was accepted by the CNCF as an incubating challenge in March 2022. Now the corporate has adopted go well with with Istio.

“Istio is the final main part of organizations’ Kubernetes ecosystem to sit down exterior of the CNCF, and its APIs are well-aligned to Kubernetes. On the heels of our current donation of Knative to the CNCF, acceptance of Istio will full our cloud-native stack below the auspices of the inspiration, and produce Istio nearer to the Kubernetes challenge,” Goldberg wrote.
